Phillip Renold is a typical 18 year old North American high school student. Like many young males, he is in the process of learning to relate romantically to the opposite sex, to attain adult independence, to complete his education and to "hang" with his friends and enjoy his music.

Opening with him in hospital, the film flashes back to show the audience how he arrived there and then goes on to complete his odyssey from that point on. What we see is a normal, happy, young man from a typical working class family who slowly begins to develop fears and suspicions of those around him. As his fears begin to increase, they impact upon his relations with his classmates, with his family and ultimately lead to his hospitalization.

Both he and his family struggle to come to terms with his illness and to try to learn how best to accept it. Befriended by a young lady in the hospital, he pursues a romantic relationship with her as he tries to cope with the frightening changes in his life.

The story is told in an entertaining, visually alluring and suspenseful manner but (and this is a big but) it depicts schizophrenia in an accurate and sympathetic manner. For all of its suspense and entertainment, it is a socially responsible and enlightening film.
